摘 要：This paper examines the effects of the abandonment of China's Grand Canal—the world's largest and oldest articial waterway—which served as a disruption to regional trade access. Using an original dataset covering 575 counties over 262 years, we show that the canal's abandonment contributed to the social turmoil that engulfed North China in the nineteenth century. Counties along the canal experienced an additional 117% increase in rebelliousness after the canal's closure relative to their non-canal counterparts. Our findings highlight the important role that continued access to trade routes plays in reducing confict.

主讲人简介：陈硕，复旦大学经济系教授。曾就读于香港科技大学社会科学部（2006-2011，获社会科学博士学位），经济学系（2005-2006，获经济学硕士学位）和中国山东大学会计学系（1998-2002，获管理学学士学位）。获得上海市第十二届哲学社会科学优秀成果一等奖并荣获上海市“浦江人才”及复旦大学“卓学学者”称号，目前担任《世界经济文汇》杂志编辑部编辑，是国内外多个知名学术杂志的匿名审稿人。陈教授的主要研究兴趣集中于中国的发展经济学、政治经济学和经济史，之前他的研究也涉及财政分权、犯罪和腐败等问题。在国内权威经济学杂志《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《世界经济》、《统计研究》、《经济学季刊》、《中国农村经济》等期刊上发表超过12篇论文，英文成果发表于American Political Science Review、American Economic Journal: Applied Economics及Journal of Economic Growth上。英文成果已经被哈佛大学、芝加哥大学、华盛顿大学、都柏林大学等欧美著名高校经济系和政治系的研究生课程列入阅读材料。陈教授近期在The American Economic Review发表论文：Rebel on the Canal: Disrupted Trade Access and Social Conflict in China, 1650-1911。
